Together these projects foster a collaborative effort of acute and community providers to develop an accessible and coordinated system of behavioral healthcare throughout Missouri’s Eastern Region.

Emergency Room Enhancement

The Emergency Room Enhancement (ERE) project was
created on behalf of the region’s Community Mental Health
Centers and over 30 behavioral health service providing
partners—hospitals, substance use providers, advocates,
law enforcement, and more. The ERE project facilitates
an integrated 24/7 region-wide approach that targets
high utilizers of emergency room and inpatient
settings, with the primary goal of reducing
preventable hospital readmissions.

Inpatient Project

The Hospital Community Linkages (HCL) Inpatient project was
created as part of a regional response to the April 2010 closure
of Metropolitan St. Louis Psychiatric Center, which provided
acute and emergency behavioral health services.
Through the use of a designated liaison per
provider, the Inpatient Project identifies and
refers potential consumers, facilitates the
referral and ensures discharge documentation
is transferred for continuity of care.

Both projects are funded by the Department of Mental Health (DMH) with the primary goal of reducing preventable hospital readmissions, increasing access to community services, and improving quality of life for consumers served within the safety net system. BHN serves as the backbone to these projects, coordinating regional meetings, providing training and capturing the data and outcomes to share with funders and stakeholders.
